abstract The invention relates to a method for producing a tobacco plant with a higher concentration of free methionine compared to wild-type tobacco, which includes a decrease in the expression or activity of threonine synthase in a tobacco plant by introducing into the plant a polynucleotide that exhibits the activity of rion interference against threonine mRNA of threonine, part of the transgenic plant, and the identification of the transgenic plant, in which the concentration of free methionine increased compared to the wild-type plant, in the expression or activity of threonine synthase was not reduced, and where the appearance of the specified mutant, non-naturally occurring or transgenic plant is essentially the same as the appearance of the wild-type plant three months after transplantation in the field or 36 days after pinching of the apex .
