The present invention seeks a liquid crystal medium which has stability against heat, light, and the like, and extremely large dielectric anisotropy, and exhibits an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase. In addition, various optical elements that can be used over a wide temperature range and have a short response time, a large contrast ratio, and a low driving voltage are sought.
