abstract The invention provides compounds compositions and methods useful for inducing or maintaining general anesthesia or sedation in mammals. A compound of formula (I), wherein R1 is selected from the group consisting of (C2-C6)alkyl, (C2-C6)alkenyl, (C2-C6)alkynyl, (C3-C6)cycloalkyl(C1-C6)alkyl, phenyl, and benzyl; R2 and R3 are each independently selected from the group consisting of (Cl-C6)alkyl, (C2-C6)alkenyl, and (C2-C6)alkynyl, or R2 and R3, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, form a heterocyclic ring having from 5 to 7 atoms, and R4 is selected from the group consisting of (C1-C6)alkyl, (C2-C6)alkenyl, and (C2-C6)alkynyl; provided that the sum of the number of carbon atoms in R1, R2, R3, and R4 is greater than 7.
