abstract The present invention provides a system and method for fast variable block-size motion estimation, which estimates the motion vectors of a 4Nx4N block and an NxN block based on the motion vectors of a plurality of 2Nx2N blocks in an image. The system includes a 2Nx2N block motion estimation device, a merging device and a splitting device. The 2Nx2N block motion estimation device is provided to receive the image and performs a motion vector estimation on a plurality of 2Nx2N blocks in the image. The merging device is coupled to the 2Nx2N block motion estimation device to compute the motion vectors of the corresponding 4Nx2N, 2Nx4N or 4Nx4N blocks from the motion vectors of the plurality of 2Nx2N blocks. The splitting device is coupled to the 2Nx2N block motion estimation device to compute the motion vectors of the corresponding 2NxN, Nx2N or NxN blocks from the motion vectors of the plurality of 2Nx2N blocks.
