abstract |
An aligning agent for liquid crystals which, when used for liquid-crystal display elements operating in the in-plane switching mode, is excellent in printability and rubbing resistance and reduced in residual image and image persistence; a liquid-crystal alignment film; and a liquid-crystal display element of high display quality employing the film. The aligning agent comprises both of a unit structure of a polyamic acid or polyimide having the tetravalent organic group constituting an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid and a unit structure of a polyamic acid or polyimide having the tetravalent organic group constituting an alicyclic tetracarboxylic acid. The alignment film is formed by applying the aligning agent to a substrate, burning the agent applied, and then rubbing the resultant film. The liquid-crystal display element operating in the in-plane switching mode is fabricated with the liquid-crystal alignment film. |
