titleOfInvention Supported metallocene catalysts, processes for the preparation thereof, and catalyst systems for olefin polymerization
abstract A supported metallocene catalyst is provided wherein a reaction product of a metallocene compound and aluminoxane is supported on an inorganic fine particle support, characterized in that (a) the BET specific surface area is in the range of 85-98% of that of the inorganic fine particle support, (b) the average pore volume is in the range of 25-60% of that of the inorganic fine particle support and (c) at least 3 peaks is present in a pore distribution curve based on the nitrogen absorption-desorption data of the supported catalyst. The supported metallocene catalyst includes the catalyst on which an olefin polymer is further supported and pre-activated. A process for the preparation of the supported metallocene catalyst is also provided which comprises the steps of (a) reacting a metallocene compound and aluminoxane in an aromatic hydrocarbon, (b) contacting a reaction product with an inorganic fine particle support at a temperature of 85 to 150 DEG C in the presence of an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent to support the reaction product on the inorganic fine particle, characterized in that subsequent to the above step (b), step (c) of washing the solid product prepared in step (b) with an aliphatic hydrocarbon at a temperature of -50 DEG C to 30 DEG C is carried out. This process includes step (d) of pre-activating the supported metallocene catalyst which comprises prepolymerizing the catalyst by introducing an olefin into a slurry wherein the supported metallocene catalyst is dispersed in an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent to support the olefin polymer further on the supported catalyst, subsequent to step (c). A catalyst system for olefin polymerization is further provided which comprises the supported metallocene catalyst which has not been pre-activated or pre-activated, in combination with an organoaluminum compound.
