titleOfInvention | A dichroic azo dye, a liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal display element containing the dye |
abstract | A dichroic azo dye characterized by having a trifluoromethyl-substituted biphenyl framework and being represented by the following general formula, and a guest-host liquid-crystal composition and a liquid-crystal display element each containing the same and having a high order parameter throughout the whole light absorption wavelength range, are provided: formula (I), wherein A and B each independently represents a C1-8 alkyl group; phenyl group; cyclohexyl group; a phenyl group or cyclohexyl group which may be substituted with (1) halogen atom, (2) trifluoromethyl, (3) trifluoromethoxy, (4) C1-7 alkyl, (5) C1-4 alkoxy, (6) C2-4 alkoxyalkyl, (7) cyclohexyl or phenyl group which may be substituted with C1-6 alkyl group; X and X1 each independently represents a methylene group or a carbonyl group; and R1 to R12 each independently represnets a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a methyl group or a methoxy group, or R2 and R3, R5 and R6, R8 and R9, and R11 and R12 may be bonded to each other to form an tetraline ring, a naphthalene ring or a quinoline ring. |
