abstract A process for the direct polyoxyalkylation of an acid sensitive low molecular weight starter in the presence of a double metal cyanide complex catalyst, said process comprising : (a) establishing oxyalkylation conditions in an oxyalkylation reactor in the presence of a double metal cyanide catalyst; (b) continuously introducing alkylene oxide and acid sensitive low molecular weight starter to said reactor; and (c) recovering an oxyalkylated low molecular weight starter polyether product; wherein deactivation of double metal cyanide catalyst is decreased by one or more of the steps of: (i) acidifying said acid sensitive low molecular weight starter prior to introducing said acid sensitive low molecular weight starter into said reactor; (ii) treating said acid sensitive low molecular weight starter with an effective amount of a base-reactive or base-absorptive substance other than an acid prior to introducing said acid sensitive low molecular weight starter into said reactor; (iii) adding an effective catalyst deactivation preventing amount of an acid to said reactor, said effective catalyst deactivation preventing amount of acid not contained in a feed stream containing acid sensitive low molecular weight starter.
