abstract | A surfactant, an emulsifier for emulsion polymerization, a dispersant for suspension polymerization and a modifier for modification of resin properties are disclosed, each of these agents being comprised of a novel compound having a dibasic carboxyl group. The compound is represented by formula (1): [X-O-(R1-O)m-OC-R2-COO]yM, where M is a hydrogen atom, a metal atom or a quaternary nitrogen-containing group, y is equal to the valence of M, R1 is at least one hydrocarbon group, R2 is a moiety of a dibasic acid or a moiety of its anhydride, m is 0 or an integer of 1 to 1,000, and X is a hydrocarbon group having at least one polymerizable double bond of carbon-carbon which may contain an oxygen atom and a fluorine atom. |
