abstract One aspect of the invention is a phosphor powder containing Eu-activated [beta]-SiAlON phosphor particles as the main component. When the median diameter (D50) of the phosphor powder that has not been processed by an ultrasonic homogenizer, as measured by a wet measurement using a laser diffraction particle size distribution analyzer, is deemed D1, and the median diameter (D50) of the phosphor powder after processing by an ultrasonic homogenizer under the following conditions, as measured by a wet measurement using a laser diffraction particle size distribution analyzer, is deemed D2, then the value of D1/D2 for the phosphor powder is at least 1.05 but not more than 1.70. (Condition) A dispersion prepared by uniformly dispersing 30 mg of the phosphor powder in 100 ml of a 0.2% aqueous solution of sodium hexametaphosphate is placed in a circular cylindrical vessel with an inner diameter of 5.5 cm at the base. Then, with a circular cylindrical chip of the ultrasonic homogenizer with an outside diameter of 20 mm immersed at least 1.0 cm into the dispersion, the dispersion is irradiated with ultrasonic waves at a frequency of 19.5 kHz and an output of 150 W for three minutes.
