abstract The present invention provides pharmaceutical compositions and methods for attenuated live influenza vaccines for nasal administration using cold-adapted influenza viruses that lack virulence factors, and includes mutations that provide sufficient replication capacity for the production of vaccines. The vaccines thus produced provide significant cross-protection for non-inoculated strains. The vaccine is safe for children under 2 years of age and adults over 49 years of age. In addition, cold-adapted virulence factor-deficient influenza viruses can be adapted to provide immunity to non-influenza pathogens.
