abstract The present invention relates to a method for preparing quartz glass crystals comprising the method step i.) self-pyrolysis of a cerium oxide powder to provide cerium oxide particles, ii.) a glass melt from cerium oxide particles, iii. Producing a quartz glass body from at least a portion of the glass melt, and iv.) reducing the size of the quartz glass body to obtain a quartz glass grain. The invention further relates to a quartz glass grain obtainable by this method. The invention further relates to an opaque quartz glass body obtainable by further processing the quartz glass grains.
