An electrically operated aerosol generating system comprising means for detecting adverse conditions, such as a drying heater or an unauthorised type of heater. The system includes an electric heater including at least one heating element for heating an aerosol-forming substrate, a power supply and a circuit connected to the electric heater and the power supply, and including a memory, The circuit is configured to have a ratio between an initial resistance (R1) of the heater and a change in resistance from the initial resistance (R2-R1) greater than a maximum threshold or less than stored in the memory At a minimum threshold, an unfavorable condition is determined, and if there is an unfavorable condition, the power supplied to the electric heater is limited, or an indication is provided to a user. The system has the benefit of not requiring a pre-stored maximum resistance value, and thus the system is capable of using different heaters and is capable of adapting to resistance variations due to manufacturing tolerances. |
