abstract Provided herein are methods and materials for assessing platelet activity and/or the ability of a substance, such as a small molecule compound and a composition comprising the same, to inhibit or activate platelet activity. For example, this document provides methods and materials that can include the following: (a) applying abnormal flow conditions (eg, oscillatory shear stress) to a platelet sample (eg, a blood sample or a platelet-rich plasma sample) to stimulate the platelets, and (b) Assess the activity of these platelets. In some embodiments, the activity of the platelets can be assessed by measuring the amount of superoxide radicals or platelet aggregation rate and/or platelet aggregation in the sample.
