The present invention seeks a liquid crystal medium which has stability against heat and light, a wide range of liquid crystal phase temperatures, a low driving voltage, a small dielectric constant, and exhibits an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase. Further, the present invention has an optical element or the like which can be used over a wide temperature range, has a short response time, a large contrast ratio, a low driving voltage, and a small dielectric constant.
