Methods and apparatus for providing a variable optical insert in an ophthalmic lens are disclosed. A liquid crystal layer can be used to provide a variable optical function, and in some examples, an alignment layer of the liquid crystal layer can be patterned in a cycloidal manner. This patterning can provide a polarization dependent lens in some examples. An energy source is capable of powering the variable optical insert contained within the ophthalmic lens. In some examples, the ophthalmic lens is cast from a polyoxyhydrogel. Various ophthalmic lens entities can include an electroactive liquid crystal layer to electrically control optical properties. |
