The present invention provides a liquid crystal composition having a high upper limit temperature in a nematic phase, a low minimum temperature of a nematic phase, a small viscosity, an appropriate optical anisotropy, a large negative dielectric anisotropy, and a large specific resistance. Among the characteristics such as high stability against ultraviolet rays and high stability against heat, at least one characteristic is satisfied, or an appropriate balance is provided with respect to at least two kinds of characteristics. The present invention also provides an AM device which has characteristics such as short response time, large voltage holding ratio, low threshold voltage, large contrast ratio, and long life. The liquid crystal composition of the present invention contains a compound which contributes to high stability to heat or ultraviolet rays, and has a negative dielectric anisotropy, and has a nematic phase, and the composition may also contain a large negative dielectric. A specific compound having an anisotropic specific composition as a first component, a specific compound having a high upper limit temperature or a small viscosity, as a second component, and a specific compound having a polymerizable group. |
