The present invention provides a liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound excellent in afterimage characteristics or display unevenness characteristics, and a liquid crystal display element and an optical element containing the composition. Provided is a liquid crystal which contains a polymerizable compound and which satisfies at least one of characteristics, such as high upper limit temperature, low lower limit temperature, small viscosity, suitable optical anisotropy, large negative dielectric anisotropy, and large specific resistance. The composition also provides an AM device having characteristics such as small afterimage rate, short response time, low threshold voltage, large voltage holding ratio, large contrast ratio, and long life. A liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable monomer having a hydrogen bond donor and capable of forming a hydrogen bond with a surface of an alignment film or an oligomer, prepolymer or polymer of the monomer as a first component. |
