Glass articles, ceramic articles or glass-ceramic articles having enhanced antibacterial efficacy are described in the present invention. The invention further describes methods of making and using such improved articles. The improved articles typically comprise a glass, ceramic or glass-ceramic substrate, a compressive stress layer extending inwardly from the surface of the glass, ceramic or glass-ceramic substrate to a first depth in the substrate, and the glass, ceramic or glass-ceramic The substrate surface extends inwardly into the substrate containing the second depth of the antimicrobial-containing region. |
