abstract The present invention relates to having a Cu content of 100 to 20,000 ppm, an Fe content of 20 to 1,000 ppm, an Al content of 1,000 ppm, an average particle size of 0.1 to 30 μm, and a BET specific surface area of 0.5 to 30 m 2 /g. Granular cerium oxide is used as a negative electrode material in the construction of a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery. The cycle performance of the secondary battery is improved while maintaining high battery capacity and low volume expansion of cerium oxide.
