titleOfInvention Method for forming a shaped preform
abstract The present invention discloses a method for forming a dried preform material prior to resin infusion. The starting material to be formed is a preform blank (e.g., a flat sheet) of dry fibrous material. The forming process is a vacuum forming process that relies on controlling vacuum pressure and deformation speed to produce a shaped preform having a three dimensional configuration. The purpose of the forming process described herein is to enable automated processes to replace conventional hand layup operations.
