abstract The present invention provides a method for simulating a moving bed system to separate a preferentially adsorbed component from a feed stream and a method for determining the composition of one or more streams in the system. The method includes the steps of rotating a rotary valve to a first valve position to direct the feed stream to a first adsorbent sub-bed. The process stream is illuminated by a laser guided by a probe positioned in the Raman system for on-line sampling of the stream. The probe is used to collect scattered light from the irradiated stream and analyze it to assess the concentration of one or more components in the stream.
