abstract | The present invention illustrates a continuous process for producing an alkyl ester product. The process comprises the step of carbonylating ethylene and carbon monoxide in the presence of a C1-6 alkanol co-reactant to form the alkyl ester product. The carbonylation is carried out in the presence of a catalyst system comprising: a. a bidentate ligand, b. a catalytic metal selected from the group consisting of Group 8, Group 9, or Group 10 metals or compounds thereof, and c. A sulfonic acid capable of forming an acid alkyl ester with the C1-6 alkanol. The process comprises the steps of separating the alkyl ester product from the carbonylation crude product stream by treatment for efficiently vaporizing the alkyl ester product in a single stage flash distillation column, and providing the bidentate ligand from the A purified alkyl ester product stream that catalyzes metal separation. The distillation column includes other separation members that are effective to provide further separation of the product. |
