abstract | A method of producing a fatty alcohol, comprising: esterifying a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acids with a lower alkanol in an esterification reactor maintained under esterification conditions to form a stream comprising the corresponding lower alkyl ester; (a) a stream of vaporization; the vaporization stream of step (b) is hydrogenated in a first hydrogenation zone operated under hydrogenation conditions to form a stream comprising a fatty alcohol and a quantity of unconverted lower alkyl ester; The transesterification of the stream of step (c) in the presence of a solid transesterification catalyst in a wax ester reactor maintained under transesterification conditions, whereby at least a portion of the lower alkyl fatty acid ester is reacted with the corresponding amount The ester of the fatty alcohol is exchanged to be converted into a lower alkanol and a wax ester derived from a fatty alcohol and a fatty acid; the fatty alcohol of the step (d) is separated from the wax ester by distillation to obtain a fatty alcohol product and a wax-containing stream.
