The present invention provides a liquid crystal composition having a high upper limit temperature in a nematic phase, a lower limit temperature of a nematic phase, a small viscosity, an appropriate optical anisotropy, a large negative value of dielectric anisotropy, and a large resistivity. Among the characteristics of high stability of ultraviolet rays and high stability to heat, at least one characteristic or at least two characteristics are sufficiently satisfied to have an appropriate balance. The present invention provides an AM device having a short response time, an appropriate pretilt angle, a large voltage holding ratio, a large contrast ratio, and a long life. The present invention provides a liquid crystal composition containing a specific compound having a polymerizable group as a first component, and a liquid crystal display element containing the composition, and a dielectric constant having a large negative value and a low dielectric constant. The specific compound of the lower limit temperature serves as the second component or contains a specific compound having a small viscosity or a large upper limit temperature as the third component. |
