The present invention relates to a therapeutic composition for a diseased tissue and a method of treating the same, which is produced, for example, by pathogens and/or toxins. The therapeutic composition comprises an anti-infective active agent, a liquid carrier, and benzocaine. The amount of benzocaine is such that the therapeutic composition penetrates more rapidly into the disease than the therapeutic composition without benzocaine. In the organization. In addition, benzocaine is capable of increasing the residence time of the activity of the anti-infective agent in the treatment area. A preferred anti-infective active agent can be an organic halide, such as a quaternary ammonium halide compound, an example of which is benzalkonium chloride. Such therapeutic compositions and methods can employ an applicator for increasing the penetration of the therapeutic composition and/or agitation of the diseased tissue to further enhance penetration. |
