abstract The purpose of the present invention is to provide: a water-soluble yellow colorant (compound) which is highly soluble in water, has high color-developing properties, and gives recorded images having an excellent chroma; and a yellow ink composition which contains the colorant and is for use in various kinds of recording, in particular, ink-jet recording. The colorant is a water-soluble azo compound represented by formula (1) or a salt thereof. The ink composition, which contains the compound or salt, has high color-developing properties, has a chroma and a hue that are suited for ink-jet recording, gives recorded matter having high fastness properties of various kinds, and gives recorded images that are excellent in terms of storage stability or the like. In formula (1), x is an integer of 2-4, and group A represents an amino group represented by any of formulae (2) to (6). In formula (2), w is an integer of 2-6. In formula (3), v is an integer of 1-3.
