abstract The present invention provides a method for preparing (6R)-tetrahydrobiopterin hydrochloride, comprising hydrogenating L-biopterin in the presence of a platinum-based catalyst in a basic medium containing a solvent, potassium hydroxide (KOH) and potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4), wherein KOH and KH2PO4 control the pH of the basic medium within a range of about 10 to about 13, to give (6R)-tetrahydrobiopterin hydrochloride.
