abstract A liquid crystal compound is provided, having stability to heat, light and so on, forming a nematic phase in a broad temperature range, having a small viscosity, a moderate optical anisotropy and a moderate elastic constant K33, and also having a large negative dielectric anisotropy and a good compatability with other liquid crystal compounds. The compound is expressed by formula (1): wherein, for example, R1 is C1-10 alkyl, R2 is C1-10 alkoxy, the ring A1, A2 or A3 is 1, 4-cyclohexylene, 1, 4-phenylene, or 1, 4-phenylene with arbitrary hydrogen substituted by fluorine, Z1 or Z4 is a single bond, -CH2CH2- or -CH=CH-, each of a, b and c is 0 or 1, c and d are 0, X1, X2 and X4 are hydrogen, X3 is fluorine, and L1 and L2 are fluorine.
