A liquid crystal composition is provided. The liquid crystal composition satisfies at least one of following properties or appropriately balances at least two of following properties: a high upper limit temperature in nematic phase, a low lower limit temperature in nematic phase, low viscosity, large optical anisotropy, large dielectric anisotropy, large electrical resistivity, high stability against ultraviolet and high stability against heat. An active matrix (AM) device is provided with short response time, a large voltage holding ratio, a large contrast ratio, a long life, etc. A liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal display device including the said liquid crystal composition are described. The foregoing liquid crystal composition includes certain tricyclic and tetracyclic compounds with a high upper limit temperature and large dielectric anisotropy as a first constituent, and a certain compound with low viscosity or a high upper limit temperature in nematic phase as a second constituent. The liquid crystal composition has nematic phase. |
