Provided is an α -SiAlON represented by the general formula (M)x(Eu)y(Si, Al)12(O, N)16 (wherein M is at least one elements selected from the group consisting of Li, Mg, Ca, Y, and the lanthanide elements (excluding La and Ce)), is characterized by the content of oxygen being 1.2 mass% and less, and the primary particles forming said α -SiAlON showing column-shaped. By ultraviolet of wavelength of 250 to 500nm or visible light as an emitting light source, it has a fluorescent property of showing the range of wavelength of 595 to 630nm of fluorescence. |
