abstract | The present invention provides a liquid crystal (LC) composition having at least one of the following characteristics or maintaining an adequate balance between at least two of the following characteristics, such as a high upper temperature limit in a nematic phase, a low lower temperature limit in a nematic phase, low viscosity, suitable optical anisotropy, large negative dielectric anisotropy, large resistivity, and high stability in reaction to UV light and heat. An active matrix (AM) element, having short response time, a high voltage holding rate, a high contrast ratio, long lifetime and so forth, is provided. The LC composition contains a specified compound having large negative dielectric anisotropy as a first component and a compound having a pyran ring and large negative dielectric anisotropy as a second component, and may further contain a specified compound having low viscosity as a third component and a specific compound having large negative dielectric anisotropy as a fourth component. The LC composition has negative dielectric anisotropy. |
