A liquid crystal composition is described, sufficiently having at least one of the properties of high upper-limit temperature of nematic phase, low lower-limit temperature of nematic phase, low viscosity, moderate optical anisotropic, large negative dielectric anisotropy, high resistivity, high stability to UV light and high thermal stability, or having a balance between at least two of the above properties. An active matrix LCD device is also described, having short response time, large voltage retention ratio, high contrast, long lifetime and so on. The liquid crystal composition includes a specific compound, having a large negative dielectric anisotropy and a low lower-limit temperature, as a first component and a specific compound, having a large negative dielectric anisotropy, as a second component. The LCD device contains the liquid crystal composition. |
