Disclosed is a method whereby the degree contraction ratio of an aluminum titanate ceramic compact with respect to a starting material mixture compact can be reduced when a ceramic compact of an aluminum titanate, such as aluminum titanate or aluminum magnesium titanate, is manufactured; and whereby the coefficient of thermal expansion of the obtained aluminum titanate ceramic compact can be reduced. This method manufactures an aluminum titanate ceramic by firing a starting material mixture containing a titanium source substance and an aluminum source substance, with the BET specific surface of the aluminum source substance being not less than 0.1 m2/g and not greater than 5 m2/g. |
