abstract | Provided is a fluorescent substance for emitting a fluorescent color, by which a white color emitting diode that emits a neutral white color or daylight color with a high fluorescence intensity can be fabricated in combination with a blue LED. In more detail, provided is a Li-containing a-SIALON fluorescent substance represented by a general formula: LixEuySi12-(m+n)Al(m+n)On+dN16-n-d (in the formula, if the average valence of Eu is denoted by a, the equation x + ya + d = m is satisfied, where 0.45 = x < 1.2, 0.001 = y = 0.2, 0.9 = m = 2.5, 0.5 = n = 2.4, and d > 0). The Li-containing a-SIALON fluorescent substance has the average aspect ratio of a primary particle is 2 or less and an average particle diameter (Dparticle) is 1 [mu]m or more and 3 [mu]m or less, both being measured by performing an image analysis of a scanning electron microscope photograph.
