titleOfInvention | Lighting unit and thermal management system and method therefor |
abstract | Disclosed is a thermal management system for a lighting unit (1000) including a light source (1004), wherein the thermal management system includes a converting element (1020) configured and disposed to absorb at least some of the light generated by the light source (1004) and emit converted light in response thereto, wherein the intensity of the converted light decays in accordance with a temperature dependent characteristic of said converting element (1020). The system further includes a sensing element (1006) configured to sense a first intensity of the converted light, and one or more subsequent decreased intensities thereof during an off-state of said light source (1004). The system is configured to determine, based at least in part on first intensity and the one or more subsequent intensities, a value indicative of an operating temperature of the light source (1004). |
