Disclosed is a lithium complex metal oxide containing Ni, Mn and Fe, and having a BET specific surface area of not less than 2 m2/g but not more than 30 m2/g. Also disclosed is a method for producing a lithium complex metal oxide, wherein a coprecipitate is obtained by bringing an aqueous solution containing Ni, Mn, Fe and Cl into contact with an alkali, and then a mixture of the coprecipitate and a lithium compound is fired at a temperature less than 900 DEG C. Further disclosed are a positive electrode active material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which is mainly composed of the above-described lithium complex metal oxide or a lithium complex metal oxide obtained by the above-described production method; a positive electrode for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which contains such a positive electrode active material; and a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having such a positive electrode. |
