This invention provides a liquid crystal compound which satisfies at least one property or at least two properties with proper balance selected form properties of a high upper limit temperature of nematic phase, a low lower limit temperature of nematic phase, a small viscosity, a large optical isotropic, a large dielectric constant isotropic, a large resistance, a high stability to ultraviolet rays and a high stability to heat. This invention provides an active matrix device having short response time, large voltage retain ratio, large contrast and long life. A liquid crystal compound and liquid crystal device including the compound is provided, wherein the liquid crystal compound has nematic phase and includes a particular five rings compound having large optical isotropic and large dielectric constant isotropic as the first component, and a particular compound having low viscosity as the second component. |
