In a membrane electrode assembly for polymer electrolyte fuel cells which comprises a polymer electrolyte membrane and two gas diffusion electrodes stuck to mutually opposite sides of the membrane, at least one of the catalyst layers as constituents of the gas diffusion electrodes in which catalyst layer, an ion-conducting binder used therein mainly comprises a block copolymer which has a particle size of 1 μm or less and comprises a polymer block (A) having ion conducting groups and a polymer block (B) having no ion conducting group and in which block copolymer the polymer block (A) and the polymer block (B) phase separate from each other; the polymer block (A) forms a continuous phase; and parts of the block copolymer in contact with the catalyst particles are the polymer block (A); and a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) using the catalyst layer(s) and a polymer electrolyte fuel cell using the MEA. |
