abstract This invention provides a phase difference film having a biaxial property or an achromatic property. It is made of a film of cellulose derivative having a hydroxy group of cellulous substituted with an acyl group having a number of carbon atoms of 5-20, preferably 7-20, more preferably 8-20, or a cross-linked form of the cellulose derivative, and the film is axially oriented. The phase difference film has a negative durable refraction property and exhibits an excellent optical characteristic. Moreover, the film can be easily obtained by one axial orientation, and has improved tearing strength and heat resistance which have been a weak point of a cellulose ester.
