abstract A nematic liquid crystal composition has a large absolute value of negative dielectric anisotropy allows driving at low voltage, has a wide range of liquid crystal temperature, and has low viscosity. A liquid crystal display device using the nematic liquid crystal is provided. The nematic liquid crystal composition, has negative dielectric anisotropy, contains; 10 to 70 wt% at least one compound selected from a group represented by general formula (IA) and (IB), 10 to 70 wt% of at least one compound selected from a group represented by general formula (IIA) to (IID), 35 to 80 wt% of at least one compound selected from a group represented by general formula (IA) to (IID), and 20 to 65 wt% of a compound represented by general formula (III), (wherein R1 to R14 each independently represent an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon numbers, an alkoxy group having 1 to 10 carbon numbers, an alkenyl group having 2 to 10 carbon numbers, or an alkenyloxy group having 2 to 10 carbon numbers, and at least one of the CH2 group may be substituted by -O-, -CO-, -COO- in which oxygen atoms in the alkyl group, the alkoxy group, the alkenyl group, or the alkenyloxy group do not bond directly together, Z1 to Z11 each independently represent single bond, -CH2CH2-, -CH=CH-, -CH2CH2CH2CH2-, -CH2CH2CH2O-, -OCH2CH2CH2-, -CH-CHCH2CH2-, -CH2CH2CH=CH-, -C≡C-,-CH2O-, or -OCH2-, Z1 to Z6, and Z9 to Z11, each independently represent -CF2O-, -COO-, or -OCO-, 1 and m are 0 or 1, rings A, B, C and D may represent trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group or 1,4-phenylene group and also rings B, C and D may represent trans-1,4-cyclohexenylene). A liquid crystal display using the liquid crystal composition is provided.
