titleOfInvention Microbial Process for Preparation of Acetic Acid and Solvent for Extracting Acetic Acet from Liquid Fermentation Culture Medium
abstract A modified, water immiscible solvent useful in extracting acetic acid from aqueous streams is essentially a pure mixture of isomers of highly branched di-alkyl amines. This solvent is essentially free of mono-alkyl amines and alcohols, with a desired cosolvent, preferably water. Solvent mixtures formed from this modified solvent with a low boiling hydrocarbon forming an azeotrope are useful in extracting acetic acid from aqueous gaseous streams. An anaerobic microbial fermentation process for the production of acetic acid uses these solvents under conditions that limit the formation of amides with the solvent, thereby increasing acetic acid recovery efficiency. These increases in productivity are also achieved when the energy source for microbial fermentation contains carbon dioxide, and the method includes a carbon dioxide stripping step prior to extracting acetic acid in solvent.
