AN AZETIDINE OF FORMULA II IS REACTED IN WHICH R1 IS AS ABOVE AND X = H, CARBOXYL OR HYDROXYMETHYL, WITH AN ALKALI METAL BASE AT 150-300 DEGREES C IN THE PRESENCE OF A CATALYST COMPRISING A METAL OR A COMPOUND A GROUP IIB METAL; AND POSSIBLY CONVERTING THE SALT OBTAINED INTO CORRESPONDING ACID; AS WELL AS NEW SALTS OF ALKALINE OR ALKALINOTERROUS METALS OR QUATERNARY AMMONIUM OF SUCH ACIDS
