titleOfInvention Method of yeast separation from cultural liquid
abstract The sepn. of a biomass from a fermentation broth contg. biomass, aq. nutrient medium and hydrocarbon is carried out by (a) treating the broth with an anionic surfactant at a pH above that at which the surfactant is ionised but below 3, and centrifuging at 20-40 degrees C (pref. 25-35 degrees C) to obtain a cream comprising biomass, nutrient medium and surfactant, and an emulsion comprising a major amt. of hydrocarbon and a minor amt. of nutrient medium, biomass and surfactant: (b) centrifuging the emulsion at a pH of 4 (pref. ca. 3) and a temp. of 65-100 degrees C (pref. 65-85 degrees C) to obtain a hydrocarbon phase and an aq. phase comprising nutrient medium, biomass and surfactant; and (c) recycling the aq. phase to step (a). The process can be applied to systems for the prodn. of a yeast biomass and dewaxed hydrocarbon from wax-contg. hydrocarbon fees (e.g. gas oils contg. 10-25C n-paraffins). Recycling the sq. phase from the 2nd centrifugation reduces the consumption of surfactant and water, and avoids effluent disposal problems.
