titleOfInvention | Method of sodium bicarbonate production |
abstract | In the prodn. of NaHCO3 by treating the discharge from an alkali chloride electrolysis cell, esp. a diaphragm cell, with CO2, (a) the Na ions in the discharge are converted to Na2CO3 in a first zone; (b) the resultant Na2CO3 is transferred to a second zone for the formation and pptn. of NaHCO3, in which an exchange between gas and liquid occurs and the solid is discharged; and then (c) the prods. obtd. in the second zone are transferred to a third zone with gas-liquid exchange and discharge of the solid, where NaHCO3 formation is completed and it is cooled. Pref. the max. temp. in the second zone is below 80 degrees C, esp. 40-60 degrees C and the temp. at the outlet from the cooling zone is 45 degrees C or under. Part of the suspension can be removed from at least one point in zone (c) or above this zone and recycled to point(s) above the max. temp. point. The process overcomes the disadvantages caused by the different kinetics of the various reactions, Na2CO3 formation occuring rapidly and almost completely, whereas the other 2 reactions (NaHCO3 formation and pptn.) are slow. A relatively low temp. can be used, esp. with recycling, and the process is suitable for continuous operation. |
