abstract 1295798 Ionic polymers RHONE-POULENC SA 18 June 1971 [18 June 1970] 28841/71 Heading C3B [Also in Divisions B1-B2] An ionic polymer comprises recurring units: alone or with recurring units: and/or units: Each of R, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are independently H or Me, E is a divalent radical obtained by removing the OH groups from a polynuclear dihydric phenol in which the OH groups are attached to different nuclei (especially bisphenol A), x and y are positive numbers which may be factional in the case of an average formula; one of A and B represents H and the other a radical -CH 2 N#(R<SP>1</SP>) 3 .Y#, in which Y# is an anion. Each of the symbols R<SP>1</SP>, which may be the same or different, are mono- or di-valent organic radicals or at least two of the radicals together form a single di- or tri-valent radical. All the valencies carried by the R<SP>1</SP> groups are satisfied by N atoms or groups -CH 2 N#; one of A<SP>1</SP> and B<SP>1</SP> represents H and the other -CH 2 X in which X is halogen, especially chlorine. The polymers may be prepared by reacting an epihalohydrin with a phenoxy resin having units II above and then quaternizing the halogenated intermediate with a mono- or poly-tertiary amine. The polymers may be reacted with a base to form ionexchange products or reacted with a crosslinking agent, e.g. formaldehyde or a condensate thereof. Uses.-Ion-exchange membranes; antistatic agents; agents to improve dye affinity.
