abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2- (6-substituted-1,3-dioxan-4-yl) acetic acid derivatives of the general formula (1), in which: X represents a leaving group and R 1, R 2 and R 3 independently of each other means an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, starting from a compound of formula (2) in which X has the same meaning as above using an acetalizing agent in the presence of an acidic catalyst. The obtained 2- (6-substituted-1,3-dioxan-4-yl) acetic acid derivative is optionally hydrolyzed in the presence of a base and water to form the corresponding salt. This process optionally further comprises converting the tert-butyl ester to a statin.
