A process for preparing a palladium, copper and gold catalyst for the production of vinyl acetate by reacting ethylene, oxygen and acetic acid, comprising pre-coating the porous support with a water-insoluble form of copper, forming a pre-supported water-insoluble palladium compound, reducing the palladium compound and also in a water-insoluble form of copper to a catalytically effective amount of free metal, impregnating the copper and a palladium-containing carrier with a potassium goldite solution and reducing potassium goldite to a catalytically effective amount of metallic gold. Alternatively, the addition of a potassium goldite solution to the support and possible reduction of the potassium goldite may immediately follow the step of providing a porous support with a water-insoluble form of copper. |
