abstract Described is a process for the preparation of N, N, 6-trimethyl-2- (4-methylphenyl) imidazo- [1,2-a] pyridine-3-acetamide and its salts, which comprises reducing the hydroxyester of formula (X) by reacting it by reaction with dimethylformamide followed by an imine salt of formula (XIII) prepared by in situ reaction of thionyl chloride with dimethylformamide and subsequent reduction with a suitable reducing agent to give an ester of formula (XII), which is then reacted with dimethylamine in a polyhydroxylated solvent at at a suitable temperature. à
