abstract Described is a process for purifying an amino acid selected from the group consisting of valine, leucine and isoleucine in high yield and high purity using an inexpensive precipitating agent and an amino acid p-ethylbenzenesulfonate crystal comprising 1 mole of an amino acid selected from the group consisting of valine, leucine and isoleucine. p-ethylbenzenesulfonic acid. This ingenious method comprises p-ethylbenzenesulfonic acid or a water-soluble salt thereof and treating it with an aqueous solution containing an amino acid selected from the group consisting of valine, leucine and isoleucine to form amino acid p-ethylbenzenesulfonate crystals and then separating and degrading said salt to purify said salt. obtain said amino acid. The p-ethylbenzenesulfonic acid may be a free acid or an alkali metal salt, an ammonium salt, etc.
